Slivers of the Self

This is a series of four self-portraits that convey the state of existence we have, that takes on different versions of ourselves. This work speaks to a personal history of the reduction, and acceptance of the person and physical aspects of myself. Depending on the time of my life, I would ‘reduce’ myself to be accepted, or remain outside any criticism. In the physical sense, my history of an eating disorder is when  I took this reduction to a literal level. If I could reduce myself fully, I could exist outside the public sphere and not have to be perceived.

What I’m left with in a sense of sobriety, is many pieces and versions of the self. This project started with a series of questions; if each version were the same self, could they exist at the same time? It reminded me of the phases of the moon we gaze upon every night. Each self-portrait exists as a reflection of these phases and the different versions of myself. The silhouette, or new moon, has reduced herself completely. The Crescent Moon, which still exists, only faintly. The half moon, which begins to accept herself in relation to the world. And finally, the whole moon, who accepts herself fully.
