The Fable of the High Priestess – By Brenna K H
Have you heard the story of the High Priestess? You haven’t? You have not lived young one! Fare not, I shall tell you now. She wasn’t just called the High Priestess, she went by many names, but the one she was born with was Reba. Reba was born to the king Darius and queen Valentine of the Shuni people. Reba was raised to be a healer, and diligently trained to be a warrior. She was a doctor, a general of war, a servant to her people, killer of enemies, heiress to the throne, and queen of the Shuni people. She was a fierce and mighty woman, all who knew her loved and feared her. Even when she wasn’t wearing her crown, she wore her power and empathy as if it was her crown. Above all, Reba was smart, she knew when to go against her instinct to kill so she could heal, and she knew when to go against her nature to heal so she could kill. The story of how she came to be know as The High Priestess is a wondrous tale.
As you know the Shuni are the largest, most technologically advanced people out there. When radiation of the earth rose the Shuni helped other people groups survive, for a price of course. Several peoples chose to become Shuni, using their former title to indicate their faction of our people. Several did not, one group called The Midnight Sun were rebellious towards us, in truth they were not a people group, they were a cult. One fated day the Midnight Sun’s began to pillage our villages, killing and destroying. Reba was quick to take them down. I remember that day as plain as, well, day. Because you see, I was there as a soldier. Reba took the leader of the Midnight Sun’s by the throat, threatened her cult with extinction if the did not surrender. The leader? She challenged Reba to a duel, but Reba was smart, she raised he challenge. Suggesting a game, of chess. Deadly of course, where real humans would take the places of the people.
It was a war of wit, of knowledge of battle tactics, of self-preservation. It tested the two leaders to their ends. The event stretched over an entire week, each day players were dragged off the chess board soaked in their own blood. Until there was left only the leader of the Midnight Sun, her king and one bishop, and Reba, her king, a rook, a knight and a bishop. Reba slayed the Midnight Sun’s king, yet did not slay the queen. For she did not need to, she had already won. Reba was worshiped for her defeat of the dangerous cult, so much that some thought she was a goddess in human form. On the day of her coronation the new Queen of the Shuni performed a speech. She stated that she was not a goddess, merely the servant for her people. Someone in the crowd stood and shouted “You are The High Priestess!” Now remember the priests and priestesses are our council and our healers. The crowd took up the cry, and from that day forward Reba was known as the High Priestess, the most beautiful, most dangerous, most clever, most powerful leader to ever exits. She was wise, as I have already said, she made everything as plain as day and kept no secrets. Any king or queen since, has a very big board to fill.
